PestSnap is not a medical or veterinary service. For severe bite reactions โ difficulty breathing, swelling of the face or throat, fever, expanding redness โ call 911 or Poison Control at 1-800-222-1222 immediately. For pet emergencies, contact the Pet Poison Helpline at 1-855-764-7661 or a licensed veterinarian.
What does PestSnap do?
PestSnap is a photo-based identification reference tool for US homes. Point your camera at a pest, bite mark, piece of evidence (droppings, mud tubes, shed skin), or a parasite on your pet โ the app returns what it most likely is, a traffic-light verdict (๐ข harmless ยท ๐ก monitor ยท ๐ด infestation risk), and practical next steps such as DIY methods or finding a licensed exterminator.
How does a scan work?
Choose one of the four scan modes (Pest / Bite / Evidence / On Pet), take or pick a photo, and tap Analyze. The image is sent over an encrypted connection to our identification proxy, analyzed by GPT-4o Vision, and a verdict card is returned in a few seconds. The photo is not retained after the response.
Is PestSnap medical advice?
No. PestSnap is an educational reference tool. It does not diagnose disease, infection, allergic reaction, Lyme disease, or any other medical or veterinary condition. It does not treat or cure anything. For severe reactions, call 911 or Poison Control. For pet health concerns, consult a licensed veterinarian.
How accurate is the AI?
AI identification is not 100% accurate. Accuracy depends on photo quality (focus, lighting, angle), how much of the subject is visible, and how closely the subject matches common US household pests. PestSnap always shows a confidence indicator alongside the identification. For any important decision โ especially suspected termite activity, bed bug infestation, severe bite reactions, or pet illness โ consult a licensed professional.
What pests does PestSnap identify?
PestSnap focuses on the 25+ most common US household pests, including: American cockroach, German cockroach, bed bug, carpenter ant, pavement ant, subterranean termite, drywood termite, brown recluse spider, black widow, house spider, common tick species, flea, silverfish, fruit fly, pantry moth, wasp, yellow jacket, hornet, mosquito, earwig, centipede, springtail, booklice, and more. Regional outliers and non-US species may be identified with reduced confidence.
Are the Bite and Pet modes safe to use?
Yes โ the Bite mode helps identify what pattern a mark is consistent with (e.g. clustered linear pattern consistent with bed bug), not whether you have an allergic reaction or an infection. The Pet mode helps identify ticks, fleas, or mites you see on your dog or cat, not whether your pet has a parasite-borne disease. Both modes always display emergency contacts (Poison Control, Pet Poison Helpline) and a clear "not medical or veterinary advice" disclaimer.
How do I find an exterminator?
From any verdict card, tap Call an exterminator. PestSnap uses the Yelp Fusion and Google Places APIs to show licensed pest control businesses in your area, sorted by rating and distance. This is a convenience feature; PestSnap does not collect referral fees from most listed exterminators and is not affiliated with Terminix, Orkin, Bulwark, or any other named provider.
How many scans do I get per week?
Premium subscribers get up to 50 scans per week (rolling 7-day window, auto-resets Monday 00:00 UTC). This soft cap protects the service from abuse and keeps the per-user economics sustainable. Most households scan well under 5 times per week โ if you hit the limit, a friendly "come back next week" screen appears.
How much does PestSnap cost?
PestSnap offers two subscription tiers:
Prices may vary by region. All subscriptions auto-renew unless cancelled at least 24 hours before the end of the current period.
How do I cancel my subscription?
On your iPhone, go to Settings โ Apple ID โ Subscriptions โ PestSnap and tap Cancel Subscription. You can also reach this from inside PestSnap via Settings โ Manage Subscription.
How do I restore a subscription on a new device?
Open PestSnap, go to Settings โ Restore Purchases while signed in to the same Apple ID that made the original purchase. The subscription will be restored within a few seconds.
Is my data private?
Yes. All scan history, saved photos, chat messages, and preferences are stored locally on your device using SwiftData. No account is required. No analytics. No ad trackers. Photos you scan are sent to our identification proxy only for the few seconds of the scan and are not retained. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
What iOS version is required?
PestSnap requires iOS 17.0 or later and runs on iPhone only (portrait).
What if I get a network error when scanning?
Scanning requires an internet connection. If you see "Scanner briefly offline", check Wi-Fi or cellular data and try again. If you're on a region-restricted network, PestSnap may be unable to reach our identification proxy; a VPN to a US endpoint usually resolves this.
Does PestSnap work outside the US?
PestSnap is tuned for common US household pests. International pests may be identified with lower confidence, or the generic category (e.g. "cockroach species") may be returned without a precise North American species match. The Exterminator Finder currently only covers US business listings.
